5 Things to Include in a Home Emergency Kit

September 30, 2025

Emergencies can happen when we least expect them, from winter storms and power outages to unexpected medical situations. Having a well-stocked emergency kit at home can make a big difference when help is on the way or if you need to care for your family until first responders arrive.

Here are five essential items every home emergency kit should include:

1. Water and Non-Perishable Food

Keep at least one gallon of water per person per day for three days, along with easy-to-store foods like granola bars, canned goods, and peanut butter.

2. Flashlight and Extra Batteries

If the power goes out, a flashlight will help you move around safely. Be sure to include extra batteries and check them regularly to make sure they still work.

3. First Aid Kit

A simple first aid kit with bandages, antiseptic wipes, and gauze can help treat minor injuries until professional help arrives.

4. Important Documents

Keep copies of identification, insurance cards, and medical information in a waterproof bag or folder. Having these ready can save valuable time during an emergency.

5. Medications and Medical Info Sheet

If anyone in your household takes prescription medication, store a few days’ supply in your kit. Include a list of medications, allergies, and any important health conditions for each family member.

 Bonus: Warmth and Comfort

Add extra blankets, warm clothing, and even a small battery-powered radio to stay informed and comfortable if you’re stuck without heat or power.

Don’t Forget to Check Your Kit

Your emergency kit only works if it’s up to date. Set a reminder to check and restock your supplies twice a year, especially before winter and summer storm seasons.

Taking a few minutes to prepare today can make all the difference when every second counts.
