Simple Steps to Help First Responders Find You in an Emergency

October 13, 2025

When an emergency happens, every second counts. The faster paramedics and other first responders can find you, the sooner they can provide the care you need.

Here are a few simple things you can do today to make sure your home is easy to locate in a crisis:

1. Make Sure Your House Numbers Are Clearly Visible

  • Use large, reflective numbers that can be seen from the street, even at night.
  • Keep numbers clear of overgrown bushes or decorations.
  • If you live in an apartment or multi-unit building, make sure unit numbers are clearly marked.

2. Turn On Your Porch Light

  • If you’ve called 911 after dark, turn on your outdoor lights to help responders quickly identify your home. A well-lit entrance makes it easier and safer for crews to reach you.

3. Keep Driveways and Walkways Clear

  • Clutter, snow, or ice can slow down emergency crews when seconds matter.
  • Shovel or salt walkways in the winter.
  • Move vehicles or obstacles out of the way whenever possible.

Small Steps, Big Difference

Taking these simple actions can help our team and other first responders reach you faster and safely, ensuring you receive the help you need as quickly as possible.

By preparing now, you’re making it easier for us to care for you and your loved ones in an emergency.
