  1. Stay Calm and Speak Clearly: While it’s normal to feel anxious, try to stay as calm as possible. This will help the dispatcher gather the necessary information quickly.
  1. Be Prepared to Answer Key Questions:
  1. What’s happening? Describe the emergency, the symptoms, and the severity of the situation.
  1. Where are you? Provide a detailed location (address, building name, and/or cross streets). The clearer the description, the faster the response.
  1. What phone number are you calling from? This helps the dispatcher contact you if the call is disconnected.
  1. Do NOT Hang Up: Stay on the line with the dispatcher until they tell you to hang up. They may give you important instructions to follow until paramedics arrive.

What Happens When the Paramedics Arrive:

When Rockland Paramedics arrive at the scene, the quicker you can assist them, the better care they can provide. Here’s what you can do to help:

  1. Prepare Your Location:
  1. If possible, secure your pets to avoid distractions.
  1. Turn on the porch or exterior lights if it’s dark outside.
  1. Have someone waiting outside to guide the paramedics to your location.
  1. Ensure Access to the Property:
  1. If you’re in a building, notify security or building staff to allow access if needed.
  1. Unlock any access doors, gates, or barriers to allow paramedics to enter quickly.
  1. Provide Patient Information:
  1. If possible, have the patient’s medical history ready, including any medications they’re currently taking. This can be critical for paramedics to know when providing care.
  1. Give Paramedics Space to Work:
  1. Clear the area so paramedics can assess and treat the patient without obstruction. This ensures they can perform their duties efficiently and effectively.
